Paper presented at the British Educational Research Association Annual Conference, University of Sussex at Brighton, September 2-5 1999. (URL: HYPERLINK "http://www.leeds.ac.uk/educol/documents/00001363.htm" http://www.leeds.ac.uk/educol/documents/00001363.htm) Abstract: This paper outlines the development of a large-scale research instrument that is sensitive to the particular characteristics of the target audience - secondary school teachers of English. The instrument took the form of a series of characterisations of different types of teachers from which respondents were asked to nominate the one to which they felt closest. The instrument was validated in two ways. Firstly, each respondent was asked to highlight passages about which they felt particularly strongly, indicating either agreement or disagreement, and the results of this showed that the vast majority of respondents found it easy to identify with a single description. Secondly, interviews were held with the respondents at one school who had previously completed a questionnaire designed to elicit views about the teaching of English, and their attitudes to the two instruments were compared (author abstract) Keywords: English Studies Teachers; Likert Scales; Research Methodology; Teacher Attitudes: Questionnaires Ashby, John (2005) Designing a survey of teachers commissioned by the General Teaching Council England: turning policy issues into researchable questions. Paper presented at the British Educational Research Association Annual Conference, University of Glamorgan, 14-17 September 2005 Abstract: The General Teaching Council England commissioned the National Foundation for Educational Research to carry out a large-scale survey of teachers in 2004. A systematic procedure was developed and utilized in order to formulate and develop research themes and research questions that were relevant to policy needs. The procedure that is articulated in this paper achieved a degree of success in marrying the needs and constraints of research with policy development. The underpinning purpose of doing this was to achieve meaningful co-ordination between two different paradigms: research and policy (author abstract). Paper presented at the British Educational Research Association Annual Conference, University of Warwick, 6-9 September 2006. Abstract: In 2004-05 an evaluation was made of a network in England of out-of-school classes for gifted and talented school pupils. A key source of evaluation data was a survey of around 800 pupils, using a four-page written questionnaire. This paper explores some of the difficulties and dilemmas experienced in the survey process, relating to design of the questionnaire, bias in the sample, and analysis of responses. The detail of responses, particularly those made to open questions, is examined, and problematic aspects are catalogued. Tensions of analysing quantitatively essentially qualitative data are exposed. The questionnaire itself is included as an appendix to the paper. Conclusions are drawn from these experiences about positive and negative aspects of using questionnaire surveys as an evaluation tool (author abstract).
