Over the period January 2007 to October 2009 colleagues from Addis Ababa University and the Von Hügel Institute are working together to support the development of applied and action research in education in higher education institutions in Ethiopia.
The work is directed by Professor Tirussew Tefferra, Dean of the College of Education at Addis Ababa University and Professor David Bridges and Dr Barbara Ridley of the Von Hügel Institute in Cambridge and the University of East Anglia. The work is sponsored under the UK Department for International Development/ British Council programme Development Partnerships for Higher Education (DelPHE)
The programme is designed to provide training and support for Education faculty and postgraduate students across Ethiopia’s fast developing higher education system. It focuses on educational research which meets two requirements:
(i) methodologically, it is close to practice especially at the local level and including practice in the researchers’ own institutions, and its aim is to improve practice;
(ii) substantively, it contributes to understanding and progress in relation to the Millenium Development Goals including, in particular: universal primary education; gender equality and the empowerment of women; combating HIV/AIDS and social inclusivity.
The HE institutions in Ethiopia which are already committed to involvement in this programme include the universities of Mekelle, Jimma, Bahir Dar, Alemaya, Arbaminch and Dila. Workshops were held in Mekelle and Jimma in May 2007; further workshops will be held at the remaining four during the period of the project. It is hoped that other institutions within reach of these will be invited to participate.
